San Gennaro Festival - Soho, New York City

Soho is a neighborhood in New York City. It is the area south of Houston Street, in the center of the island of Manhattan. It is known for its cast iron architecture and high end boutiques. Soho is also home to New York’s original Little Italy. I spent a day walking around Soho and looking for interesting sights and faces.

My visit coincided with the San Gennaro festival, a 10 day celebration of Italian food, culture, food, rides, food, people, and, did I mention food? My morning walk allowed me to explore the festival before it was overwhelmingly crowded. I was able to watch the people who work hard to make all of that food, and provide the games and activities that everyone enjoys.

The street of Soho are also filled with other people working hard to make a living. Whether they are making deliveries by bicycle or staking out a corner to sell homemade food and goodies, there are plenty of ways to enjoy good things to eat.

The Leslie-Lohman Museum is also in Soho. This wonderful space is the only museum dedicated to art produced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community. On display now is Athi-Patra Ruga: Lord, I gotta keep on (movin’). Mr. Ruga (b. 1984) was born, and still lives, in South Africa. His work explores notions of utopia and dystopia, and has themes that include sexuality, Xhosa culture, and the place of qu  Ernest in post-apartheid South Africa.

I finished my day with a walk into nearby Greenwich Village, and headed for Washington Square Park. Surrounded on there sides by New York University, the park serves as its “quad” and is always filled with students, along with lots of the characters you would expect to see in Greenwich Village.

Walking around New York, or any city, is a great way to spend a day, so get out and do it.

Nuts and Bolts

Leslie-Lohman Museum is open Wed 12:00 - 5:00PM Thu - Sun 12:00 - 6:00 PM. Admission is free at all times.
